Maui . . . Murder . . . Mystery

Haole Wood Dee DeTarsio 9780615640495 Books

An interesting story told from a beautiful location. The story goes into great detail about life on Maui and in spite of the circumstances that brought granddaughter and grandmother back together after years of separation, brings a sense of warmth to the story. The language barrier between the two does not stop the relationship from forming and growing as it seems the grandmother is able to pick up on what her granddaughter needs while the granddaughter has no idea what her grandmother is saying.

The romance and friendships that form shows well in this story as she is confronted with trying to find a way to prove her grandmother innocent of murder. However, this story seems to center more on the lifestyle of Maui than it does on allowing the reader to solve the mystery.

The four star rating instead of five star is due to some of the credibility of the storyline: without spoilers, the weather forecast incident, later the language barrier between grandmother/granddaughter is extreme, the start up and expansion of the business that went so well so quickly. However, I want to point out these are just things that struck me but DOES NOT take away from the story at all.

Overall, this is a very well written, entertaining story and I know this author is going to do well with this story and future ones to come.

A murder and a ghost...a very funny ghost...makes for a good read. Shows how different cultures don't always see and hear the same things and it's funny to watch this story unfold! An example...the name of the clothing tag was supposed to be "Hollywood",the ladies working on the project thought the lady from the Mainland was saying "Haole Wood"...haole is what they call "outsiders" in the Hawaiian Islands. These ladies are thinking she's crazy for naming her label like that! If you have the chance to read this book,I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend buying it!
the mystery itself was not bad, but the character depiction was horrible....the main character is very silly and immature for someone her age, but its the grandmother that I find the most offensive (and yes, I am a Hawaii born and bred grandma myself)....the old lady (Korean) has lived in Hawaii for at least 50 yrs,, can't speak any English except for 2 words....the author uses this as a reason why she cannot understand what her granddaughter says most of the time, yet the woman can understand everyone else in the story....overall, its not a well-written book and I do not recommend it to anyone...there are better Hawaii-based mysteries one can choose.....
What a great find! This book got my attention first because I live in the midwest and related to a lot of the midwestern stereotypes. From reading some of the other reviews, I think they are taking this story way too seriously. This is a book to be enjoyed. Yes, there are typos and punctuation errors; put that aside and it is still a very enjoyable book.

This author's way of writing really tickled my funny bone. She writes like I talk. I was laughing-out-loud throughout a good portion of this book and could relate to Jaswinder and her many antics.

The only thing I didn't like about the book was the ending. What did happen with Jaswinder and Jac? Sometimes I guess it's better to leave the ending to the reader's imagination.
Jaswinder is a local tv station weather girl, living in San Diego. Her grandmother from Maui, Halmoni gets arrested and since Jaswinder is the closest family member, she has to fly over to Maui to bail her grandmother out of jail and find out why she was arrested. Jaswinder loses her job while helping her grandmother and decides to stay for a few days. Soon after arriving in Maui, she meets two hot guys. One of the guys is murdered and her grandmother becomes the main suspect. Jaswinder decides to investigate the murder on her own as she feels the police are not doing anything to find the real murderer.

There is a cute romance between Jaswinder and Dr Justin Case. Jaswinder goes into business with her grandmother and develops a closer relationship. I enjoyed all of the madness and mayhem with Jaswinder's investigations. She does seem to have quite a bit of bad luck in her personal life as well. This was a fun book and kept me entertained.
4.5 stars!

Jaswinder Park is living her dream as a weather reporter in San Diego when she is called on by her parents to rush to Maui to bail her Hawaiian grandmother out of jail for selling marijuana. Jaswinder's bad judgment in her attempt to play hooky from work causes her to lose her job. Adding insult to injury, within 24 hours of her arrival in Maui, her grandmother is accused of murdering a man who was last seen licking tequila off of Jaswinder's wrist. As if all of this is not enough, Jaswinder is convinced she is losing her mind when a naked man claims to be her Guardian Angel despite his insistence that he cannot grant any of Jaswinder's wishes or help in any way to find the real killer. What good is a Guardian Angel when he just silently stands by and watches your world fall apart?

This novel, while completely over-the-top, was 100% original and laugh-out-loud funny. I loved every character, especially Jaswinder and her grandmother and the relationship between the two of them was unbelievably touching Who would think that such a believable bond could be created between two people who don't even understand each other's language? I loved being a bystander as Jaswinder grew into herself and discovered what really made her happy. I can't wait to read more by Dee DeTarsio!
