In a down to earth tone, Mridu Khullar Relph covers the most needed aspects of freelance writing. The book is beneficial to both new and established freelancers. What I really liked was that the author not only talked about how to make $1,000, but also broke it down into additional resources like sample query letters and letters of introduction. She lists specific places to find work, how to get more than one article out of an idea and how to repurpose work to turn it into even more earnings.
The wealth of information she presents in the book is a pleasant surprise and worth far more than what’s being charged for the cost. I highly recommend this book.
I’ve been freelancing for more than 20 years, and try to keep abreast of the best and most current freelancing advice and resources, as well as occasionally refreshing myself on the classics. So I was surprised at how many of the tangible, actionable nuggets of advice in Mridu Khullar Relph’s guide to making a grand more a month were things I hadn’t considered, or hadn’t considered from her angle.
Some things I’d just forgotten and needed reminding about, like tapping your existing sources. But even for a simple topic like that—digging into your existing network for leads—she provides extra depth on the topic, with multiple how-tos and variations on the theme. There are simple tips, like asking for more, using your reprints and reslanting topics, but the way she delves into the subjects is both thorough, insightful and persuasive, so that you can see yourself actually acting on them, not merely agreeing.
Speaking of agreeing, Relph has a way of speaking directly to you as a reader, so you nod your head and say, “So true,” or “No kidding.” (Or in my case, “I should have thought of that!”). I have read her blog and received her newsletter for a while, and am always struck by her honesty, her no-gimmicks style and the usefulness of her insights.
I wasn’t surprised when I came here to post and saw all the five-star reviews. That’s an easy (and sound) evaluation to make.
I received a review copy of Mridu Khullar Relph's The Freelance Writer's Guide to Making $1,000 More This Month. I have been following Ms. Relph's career with considerable interest. She is in India and has been able to get the rates she wants and has written for several international publications. No more cheap Indian labor. She delivers quality and is paid accordingly.
I was curious about her methods. The book if refreshingly direct and is an easy read. She covers many of the obstacles that writers face and more importantly, their thought processes and helps writers overcome them. She includes invaluable titbits on client psychology.
Some of her suggestions may seem a shade radical such as "resend the rejects" but they are powerful and easy to implement. Editors change and yesterday's reject can become today's thousand dollar assignment.
Another key element in the book is the frequent reference to walking away from clients. As writers, many of us are often tempted to take whatever we get but that is doing a disservice to ourselves as well as to our fellow writers. Walk away from a client and you usually gain more respect and the client knows that you are serious.
My favorite section of the book is the one about going international. It clearly outlines what is possible and what writers need to do to tap this market. Pay rates are also discussed which make the calculations simpler.
I would recommend this book to freelancers who have built a portfolio. You do need to be at a certain level and have a few projects under your belt before you take the plunge.
A good book with enough facts to get you going. Mridu is an excellent no-nonsense writer who gets straight to the point and impresses you with her down-to-earth experiential insight that works its magic. I would not only recommend this book but all the books she has written so far and the books she will write in the future.
Mridu once again does a great job sharing her experience with the rest of us. Her success is helping others succeed. Her generosity in sharing with other freelancers is both inspiring and encouraging. A must have book in a must have series.
