I have just finished reading this and I must say that it was really good. I didn't know much about the Trojan War or the Amazons before I read this, but now I understand those subjects a lot better. I understand that the Trojan War was with the Greeks against the Trojans and that the scandal with Paris and Helen started the whole thing and who was on which side, but I also learned that there was so much more behind it all besides Paris and Helen. As far as the Amazons go, there were cool facts and I learned what they really were. For historical purposes it was informative and interesting without being stuffy and slow. I definitely recommend it for those purposes.
My complaints about the book is only that I felt there should be more depth. You do understand how the characters feel about everything, but I felt like there was something missing. I understand that the author had a lot of ground to cover with the War and all the little side stories, but I felt like she didn't really explore the depths of individual's drives, fears, and emotions. It also felt like she skimmed on some scenes when you really want a little more.
Another pro of this book, though, is the fact that it is fairly clean. I wouldn't recommend it to people under the age of 11 and 12 because some of the truths are sad and a little hard to take. For example: slaves inside of Troy were really not respected as individual women and the king didn't have a problem that his soldiers had children with them, but the worst thing was that the women were aware that if Troy was taken they would be seriously mistreated by the opposing army. Thankfully, the author describes things very tactfully, like saying men made women their concubines instead of other alternatives. The main character gets married, but there is nothing disturbing.
Overall it was a good book; I might even read the sequel.

The Moon Riders is an excellently written story about a young woman warrior, Myrina, and her involvement in the historic Trojan Battle. I thought the plot of the book was exciting as the tragic events from Homer's Iliad slowly unraveled. Cassandra, Paris, Helen and other characters from the Iliad were seamlessly interwoven with the fictional characters of the novel. Myrina and her friends and family felt real in both their behaviors and emotions.

After reading this book I did a little research on Cassandra -- a character from the Iliad I knew almost nothing about. After reading various stories about her, I felt that author Theresa Tomlinson did an excellent job of merging a mythic two-dimensional character into a believable three-dimensional person.

I also appreciated the Cast of Characters listed at the back of the book. Some of them were obviously fiction, some were obviously from the Iliad, but some were from other Greek writings. For example I had never heard of Penthisilea from the heroic poem by Quintus of Smyrna. I'm glad Tomlinson used other ancient Greek sources for her characters. After reading the reading the author's note -- it was very apparent how much she enjoyed the research and writing of this story.

A compelling novel, the Moon Riders will make readers feel like they are getting a glimpse inside the world of the ancient Greeks.

The next book in this two-part series is the Voyage of the Snake Lady.
Myrina is just thirteen years old when she joins the Moon Riders, a band of women who are both warriors and priestesses. She expects to stay with them a few years, then return to her village to marry and raise a family. Little does she know what lies ahead. When Myrina meets Cassandra, the young princess of Troy, the two girls become friends. But war and tragedy lurk on the horizon. Cassandra sees in her visions the doom that her brother Paris's affair with Helen will bring to Troy. But her father dismisses her warnings as lunacy. Soon, Myrina and the other Moon Riders find themselves drawn into the Trojan War as they try to help the besieged city of Troy defend itself from the Spartans.

This book was very exciting, and the details of life in the ancient word were fascinating. At times, I had a hard time putting this book down! I highly recommend this book to teen readers who are interested in the legend of Troy, or Greek mythology in general. I can't wait to read the upcoming sequel!
But no matter how many times I picked it up it frustrated me! It didn't flow, and parts of it didn't even make sense, it was like a chunck had been ripped out and yet the story went on. Also, and this is really weird, once the jacket was off of the book, the black of the actual book under the jacket rubbed off on everything! My hands, my fingers, my pants and shirt. Anywhere the book touched it left black charcoal like smudges. It was very cheap but I couldn't even bring myself to donate it, I threw it away.
A preview of the story, whether it was hardback or paperback, used or new. Everything I wanted to know was there already. I think that is giving great service. I am totally satisfied and recommend to all my friends and those I deal with in our Animal Sanctuary.
Another great book by Tomlinson. Emotional and inspiring. She captures femininity and adventure so truthfully. Her characters are honest and real, easily relatable to.
This book is an amazing historical fiction story about the s and their involvement in the Trojan War. I would recommend this book to anyone. Myrina is an amazing character, and in this story you really feel her emotions and struggles! I LOVE IT!!!!!!
