I didn't live in an area that had cable when MTV was all the rage and I've never been cool enough to be a regular Rolling Stone reader, so I'd never heard of Jancee Dunn before I bought this book based on a great price, good reviews and a catchy title. So I started to read with no pre-conceived notions or expectations.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was sorry as it came to an end. While I'm older than the author, I feel like she almost described my life and feelings about many things - and wrote the book I might have if only I had any writing ability. I also have two sisters and I really enjoyed how she was able to write about her family making everything a big production with loving exasperation and acceptance, while also seeming to think it's normal.

It was rather reassuring to know that I wasn't the only one who wistfully lusted over the Swiss Colony catalog in my youth only to be disillusioned by what I received in my first - and only order in adulthood. The sections on the celebrity beauty books and the Easy Bake Oven were other favorites. I liked her so much that if she ever had a positon available for a friend, I'd apply. It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud, but she managed it multiple times throughout the book.

I totally enjoyed this book and look forward to reading her others.

Series of personal essays, which I found funny, interesting, and relatable. Above average writing quality. kept my attention.
Having teased my 76 year old mother about her own recent "ink" (her eyebrows,) I bought this book based on the title to read and to share with my Mom. While I did laugh along through the first third, relating to the newspaper clippings and answering machine messages, I was disappointed with the author's record of her phone calls with friends plopped into the middle of the book. They seemed pretty inane and not really relevant to the story. (This is the part where I may just be out of touch with mainstream America...or old.)

But I did enjoy riding along on the family trip to the tattoo parlor enough to mail the book to my mother (perhaps with a few newspaper clippings and magazine articles.) I'm also curious about the author's earlier book about her years as an interviewer for the Rolling Stones and will look it up.
I loved this book from the opening vignette! The author described with detail & humor incidents from her own family life which very well could have been written about my family as I was growing up! I laughed out loud numerous times, as I was reading this -- sometimes in the middle of the night! I've just recommended it to my two sisters & best neighbor/friend. They'll think it's a hoot! Thank you, Jancee Dunn!
I love Jancee Dunn and all of her books. I swear that we shared the same childhood, same parents, and same quirks. I read the book in two days and that was only because I had to physically make myself put the book down so I could save some fun for the next day.

If you are in your 40's and enjoyed a middle class upbringing with blue collar parents and shag carpeting you will enjoy reading this book and floating down memory lane.

After thoroughly enjoying 'But Enough About Me', I was excited to see Ms. Dunn had a new book out of short stories about her life. This book is a bit more on the personal side, focusing mainly on stories of her family (who just crack me up!) and her own life, whereas her previous book was more about her job at Rolling Stone, and the famous people she had to interview.

Some of her stories are just too funny (like her and her sister's obsession with their childhood home after their parents sold it, and Heather's poor son wondering why he has to trick or treat in a strange neighborhood an hour and a half away from home! Oh, and the Japanese toilet! I almost peed myself reading that one! ). Some of her stories are sweet (like her father's incessant need to send clippings about every possible disaster just to make sure his girls are ok). And some are very sad (like her father not having a recording of his own father's voice and the tapes Jancee gives him of his mother).

But the best story, by far, is the title story. Way to go Mrs. Dunn for getting that Raven!! I must agree with Jancee though...when it's not your own mother, you think it's a great idea...but I'm not sure how I'd feel about MY mom telling me she wanted a tattoo! Anyway, I definitely recommend this book for those of you interested. Ms. Dunn has a great sense of humor, and a fantastic family for her to get her writing inspiration from. I look forward to whatever she comes up with next!
I loved Jancee dunn's last book and I truly couldn't wait for her to write again. I wasn't disappointed. I love her, I love her family and I love her friends.
I read it in one day because I simply couldn't put it down. Even so I couldn't help but appreciate Jancee's clever, self deprecating stories. Every once in awhile I find myself smiling at something that she, her mother or one of her sisters has said. And who among us wouldn't love to go back and look at our childhood home? Of course we might not think if using our little nephew as a prop.
Jancee is such a terrific writer and this is a terrific book.
This is not as good as But Enough About Me, but I was expecting that. BEAM was about how she got started working at Rolling Stone and a bunch of summaries of celebrity interviews, which was really revealing and told in a great voice. This was about her family life, mostly her parents--just not as interesting to me as the subject of the first book.

However, I enjoyed the humor more and more as I went on. It had the same funny self-deprecating writing voice and observations. I laughed aloud several time. If you enjoy memoir/essay-type books, I would encourage you to give this one a try. It won't change your life, but it was a pleasant read.
